Ipad completely discharged itself

iPad was at 60%. Plugged into wall socket to charge. iPad was shutdown (switched off) not just asleep.

The next day turned iPad on to find that, not only had it not charged, but had in fact completely discharged the battery.

Is iPad faulty? Is this a known issue? Assumed that iPad would charge the same way as the iPhone.

Please help. iPad is only a couple of weeks old - 16GB iPad 4 with Retina Display.

That doesn't sound right at all, I'd be inclined to make a Genius Bar appointment at your nearest Apple Store.
