One of the first thing I noticed was small changes to the keyboard with the grey background and the shift keys icons !

My iPad Air takes an age to input the pin code since the update after the screen has been in standby. :(

Seems to me all the changes are purely cosmetic. Bit of a waste of time.

is the split keyboard new? I ask because I am new to the Apple market (mostly)
No, that's not new. The ability to split the keyboard was there before iOS 7.
The possibility to disable it was in settings before iOS 7.1.

I've noticed albums in music are arranged chronologically from newest album to oldest <img src="http://www.ipadforums.net/attachment.php?attachmentid=54203"/>
That's in Artists view. Not sure if that's new.
The Album view shows them in alphabetical order, as before.

This is a maintenace update and to most users you would see only small changes however in saying that the update would have corrected majority if not all minor bugs plus provided some enhancements. The added support for the car systems. The update will vary between devices so one may notice more changes for example on a iPhone versa an iPad. Battery life has improved at least on my iPad . Hope that answers your query.

The problems of the grey screen when closing an app, mainly Safari, with the pinch gesture is no more.
