Taking Long Time on "Prepare to Restore"

Hi all,

I have the iOS 7 ipsw file saved to my PC. I got my iPad 2 into DFU mode, shift-clicked on "Restore iPad", specified the ipsw, and now it's been stuck at the "Preparing iPad for restore" for the last 10 minutes at least. Is this normal?

I'm trying to upgrade to iOS 7 from iOS 6.1.3 jailbroken.

Any advice?

An hour plus wait? If that's the case, then fine. How long should it take, I guess, is the better question?

Good point - it shouldn't take that long. But, TBH, I couldn't tell you why it's not working...

All I can suggest is to use get the iPad out of recovery mode by either (1) resetting the iPad by holding the home/sleep buttons or (2) use TinyUmbrella to kick it out of recovery mode.

Then, once it's back to normal, retry the process.

This is the 10th time I've tried on my computer at least ha ha. Maybe if I try installing iTunes on a friend's computer and upgrading on that? If I do so, will I be able to restore my apps and such from my own machine afterwards?

Thanks for your help!

Try going through the steps outlined in this link (from my fellow moderator f4780y): http://www.ipadforums.net/jailbreak...lsafe-method-restore-current-version-ios.html

Maybe it'll help.

I hesitate to tell you to to use another's iTunes, because usually, when you sync to another iTunes, you lose everything. But, if you have to, you have to, right? Just make a good (recent) backup on your iTunes, first. Then, if you succeed on upgrading it on the other computer/iTunes, set it up as new - doing as minimal a set-up to get it running.

Then, connect it back to YOUR iTunes and select "Restore from backup." This, hopefully, will put everything on it that was on it before you upgraded.

But, do try the steps in the link, first. May work...

Good luck.

Hi willerz2,

I'm using iTunes version 11.1.0.126, which I think is the latest available version.

Try using an older version of iTunes. There are quite a few restoration problems with iTunes 11.1 and a few issues that are strictly present in the iTunes 11.1 update. With 11.0.5, you can still restore to iOS 7. After the restore process, you can upgrade to iTunes 11.1 again. Below are the direct Apple download links for iTunes 11.0.5. Before you install iTunes 11.0.5, uninstall iTunes 11.1, and delete any locally cached data as well as they cannot be used in an older version of iTunes.

Mac OSX: https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/iTunes11/091-9268.20130816.Bbgtr/iTunes11.0.5.dmg

Windows 32-bits: https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/iTunes11/091-9269.20130816.Azfre/iTunesSetup.exe

Windows 64-bits: https://secure-appldnld.apple.com/iTunes11/091-9270.20130816.Qw23e/iTunes64Setup.exe

OK - I'll give this a shot in the next few days and I'll let you know how I get on!

Thanks!

Awesome. Hope everything goes well. Basically just "downgrade" to iTunes 11.0.5, and follow the Failsafe Restoring guide provided by Marilyn. I'll re-post the link below for your convenience

Hi willerz2,

I just tried the restore as you suggested with iTunes 11.0.5. No luck - it hangs at the "Preparing iPad for restore" part. :(

Any suggestions? Or should I just wait until I can get to an Apple store? (I'm traveling)

Bring it to the Apple Store and have them check it out. If you're under warranty/AppleCare, you can either get it fixed or replaced. If not, you can still get a free diagnostic test ran to see what the issue is.
