Which themes are you using? Are they iPad specific?
Old themes which are not designed for iPad may drain your battery fast as they often contain poorly written javascript widgets, but modern iPad specific ones should be OK.

Which iOS are you using? Also, manage your data usage. Turn off Notifications and take them off your list to block auto-fetching, same goes for your emails and IMs. Adjust your brightness accordingly and end processes that aren't in use. It also takes about a week or two for your battery to adjust to the new battery output, so if the battery draining persists after a week, you might need to take further action.

You must be downloading with Internet Explorer; it downloads the .ipsw file as a .zip file by default. Just change the file extension from .zip to .ipsw. Whatever you do, DON'T unzip it. Then it should be good to go.

If that doesn't work, try a different browser to download the .ipsw file...

If you use Firefox or Chrome, they will download the file as an .ipsw file - you won't need to change the extension.

To change it in IE, you've got to change your computer to show file extensions, then you can rename the file how you wish (ignore the Windows warning that changing the file extension may make the file not work...).
