Yes, Admiral you have it almost right. It reads cards swiped across it. Transport for London uses Oyster Cards which are purchased and can be topped up, or for the senior citizens, Freedom Passes. These cards work with the reader machines.
The one in this challenge is at Brixton Railway Station.
