What's new

What is it?

The Mountie's birthday being celebrated by a group of hooligans giving him the "bumps"
Where? Canada?
When? This year?

No,that's not it.The important piece in this picture is the round object being held up above the heads of the people celebrating.

Here's another view, taken just before the previous photo.

The subject of this challenge took place in a domed stadium on Canada's west coast.

Ha! got the Canada bit correct (a Mountie? Not so difficult. :-)
But I thought the big round thing was a dustbin lid, about to be brought into violent contact with his head by the afore-said hooligans!
So a trophy. Pretty big one, so an important occasion.
Football? Not British footie with those padded shoulders. Do Canadians play padded shoulders sort of game?
No idea which teams but location Canada might be right? (Shucks, just seen your west coast venue so ignore that bit please!)

Right so far.The trophy is the essential part of this challenge. It's a championship trophy for the Canadian version of a game played throughout Canada and the US.
I need to know what that championship is called.
"Football?",you're getting warmer. What kind of football?

Well, I only know about British footie & the mad-padded-up-rough-blokes-type played in N. America...are there any others? Not baseball? (no, think they wear one big glove for that & can't see any.) I'm not very up in sport... I'll have to go look in wiki...

This is about a football championship.I want to know what is the name of this particular football championship. It's named after the trophy, which took its name from the Canadian Governor General who donated it in 1909.

Football as played in North America was developed from the British game of Rugby, starting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Exactly the Grey Cup.The Grey Cup symbolizes the Canadian football championship. It's awarded every year in late November to the League Champions.
Here's another photo of the post game celebrations.

Wow, how about that!! I must surely be the MOST ignorant sporty dunce here, so good for wiki! Going by the pzzazz photos, it's a really Big Deal to win that.
Have to cook supper now but then & I'll see what I can come up with.

It's the largest sporting event in Canada.
The NFL championship, the Superbowl, dates to 1966.By 1966 Canadian teams had already been competing for the Grey Cup for 57 years.

Sci I'm just joining in after being in vacuum all day. Curious ...
Red jerseys hence Stampeders yes?
But the one jersey with a visible name looks like Leron Mitchell. Thought he only played for Saskatchewan and Toronto.
