Looks like a combed fabric surface. Probably synthetic but might be wool. Underlying structure not possible to determine from this shot.

But it might not be...! I'm usually way off on these

It's a travel set with latching fold-up board with
compartments for the pieces.


The challenge moves west to the Canadian Prairies. Land locked and yet Norse explorers still found it.
