It it one of those flying discs that looks like a cow-pie? If so,the best thing you can do with it is throw it.

Looks like the cover art (illustration) for a classic science fiction novel. The style is very familiar, but I don't recognize the novel. If I'm right it would be found in a library or used book store.

You're the closest so far,twerppoet. Think Juvenile. Used.book stores would be the best place to find this and other similar books.

Not a major science fiction writer. These books were ghost written by writers hired by the publisher. They were of a type sometimes called invention fiction.
