It looks like a fitting on a piece of whitewashed wood. Is it part of a hinge?

Thanks for opening that door Scifan.

My challenge is.. What is the name of this object? What is it used for?

These views are of each end of the subject. You should get an idea as to it's size from the background.

Here are 2 more views. The end view shows a minor detail missing from the first image I used for this challenge.

Edit, and here is a detail of a part of the object.

You are closing in. It's not a sextant.
It is a hand held surveying instrument. I've opened out the detailed image.

No, it isn't a transit. I just double checked on Google. I discovered that a version of the object was used in gunnery. The instrument is used in forestry, as well. I've opened out the image some more.

It looks like no one is answering this thread. Is anyone up for a guess?

My challenge is used for measuring. My questions are: -

What is the name of this object? What is it used for?

Here is another view

If I show any other angles, the challenge will become pretty straightforward.

In an earlier reply to Scifan, I said I've seen an example used in gunnery. So, in the military, this insrument was used to asssist Lewis gunners.

A gunnery inclinometer? In this case used to set the Lewis gun to the correct elevation for the range of the target.

Yes, you are right. My version is civilian. It's also known as a Clinometer.

So, onwards and upwards, Scifan.
