Hi,
I just bought ipad2 in Thailand and could not, for the life of me, find that elusive double square icon that is supposed to be on my web browser in order to open multiple web pages. Non of the Apple reps here can tell or find it for me. Come to think of it , non of the iPads on show in these shops have that icon too!! We all have just four icons on the top left hand corner of our web browser. I looked at the promo video for Safari re ipad2 and I can see it there. Please help, it is driving me nuts, as I can't speak Thai so there is a language barrier.
Cheers,
Ben

Hi Ben and welcome to the Forum!

With regards to your issue the iPad has recently had an upgrade to a new operating system which will change the way Safari works and we can now have multiple pages. So I would say that your iPad is still on the old system. Have a look in Settings - General - About, then look for Version. We are now on 5.0.1 and with it came so many new features. Let us know and we can guide you on the upgrade. It's totally free also in case you're wondering.

I just can't picture what you have. Can you do a screen shot and post it?

Can you tell me what version that you were on, because I'm thinking you may have already been on 5.0 at least. I've just looked at a video of safari and I'm sorry to say that that is the old version of Safari. The icon you were talking about was it a dark box with a number 7 on it on top of a white box and you could display thumb nails of all your pages on the screen, 9 of them in fact. The new safari has a plus sign on the right for adding another page to the same screen.

Hi, thanks for your suggestion. If you go to apple.com/iPad/videos then scroll down to video showcase safari , play the video and you will see exactly what I mean. I have exactly the same layout and web browser except on my icons displayed on the top left hand corner I am missing that double square icon third from left that can do the multiple web pages function. In other words from the left, I have the back icon, then the forward icon then the bookmark then the add icon. On the video, the web browser has the double square which is located third from left. Hope it explains more clearly to you. I have been back to the Apple outlet where I bought my ipad2 and they have downloaded the latest iOS 5.0.1 version
Many thanks in advance
Cheers

Yes that is the video I had a look at and that is the old Safari and it changed with IOS5.0.0. Your iPad must have had IOS5.0.0 already when you bought it if you didn't have that version of Safari. The new Safari does have multiple pages, just not individual web pages. There is a + on the right hand side, press this and it will load another tab for browsing. There is no way of going back to the old version, although some stores may have an older supply of iPads which may have 4.3.5 on them but there is no way of knowing without opening the box and having a look. Hope this explains it.

Hi,
Many thanks for your help, much appreciated. Yes I do have the plus and minus sign to add web pages but not to view simultaneously. I wonder why they do this because this way is old hat, my friend owns an Internet cafe and his ancient computers have this function already!!! You would have thought that Apple being in the fore front of things would have kept the multiple web pages function which is not as common or not available elsewhere. Cest la vie

Maybe, but before iOS 5 there used to be a lot of posters complaining about the lack of tabbed browsing.......sometimes Apple just can't win!

They could let users choose between both options.

Maybe that will be coming. All I used to see before iOS 5 was complaints about the grid view and lack of tabs, if they got the same message then they probably figured that there was no point in continuing with the grid view. I certainly don't see the same level of complaint about the lack of grid view.

That would be a good idea! I liked being able to see all the thumbnails on the page, but sometimes it just bugged me no end when using it.
