New Ipad1 already messed up?

I have just bought an iPad, but am not very technologically minded and wondered if someone could help me with a problem I can't seem to solve myself.

When I turned it on it came up with a black screen with a picture of a USB connection with an arrow pointing to the iTunes icon. I have turned it off and on, charged it, cried, and refrained from throwing it at a wall. I was so very excited to get this..and now it is jammed.

Ideas? Anyone? Please? Buehller?

Connect it to your computer, making sure you have the latest iTunes update first, then follow the onscreen instructions.
