iPad died unexpectedly

I have read this happening to others.

I put the machine to sleep and it wouldn't restart. After pressing the power and sleep button simultaneously it restarted. The battery power was at 60%.

Any idea on what causes this?

I does happen from time to time usually a memory issue or a corrupt app or file that caused it what you did is standard practice when something gies wrong the iPad is like any electronic device and sometimes needs to be reset

Had this issue with my 2G iPod Touch as well so it is not just with the iPad.
