I figured it out! I actually did find the filled in square a helpful clue, though it isn't strictly necessary.

I am stuck on #8. I have read every post in this thread relating to this question. I get 'close but no cigar' constantly. I have googled knot of sailors and tried every different name for the knot shown. I simply cannot figure this out.
