re: 37 - someone had mentioned 'biblical' as a clue. I'll add to that with a hint of "Steely Dan's Sisters".

I am stuck on #8. I have read every post in this thread relating to this question. I get 'close but no cigar' constantly. I have googled knot of sailors and tried every different name for the knot shown. I simply cannot figure this out.

39 was refreshingly easy. Now I'm stuck on 40. I thought the numbers were a pretty obvious clue, but I can find nothing like what's in the picture there. Any hints?

I got it! Thanks for that hint. This actually started a chain of events. I finally figured out EXACTLY what the middle character was and from there found the answer. Damn that stupid middle character. I feel really stupid for over thinking this one.
