You can have them set up from new in an apple store however, you can't update the iOS but as was said above, in the autumn the iPad becomes independent with iOS 5.

I synchronised day 1 - had no choice - and have never connected my iPad to my PC since. I live in mortal fear of iTunes. There are so many Members posting here who have lost everything when they synch I thought - no way!!

I have the first or second iPod, 30gb model, iPod Nano, iPod Touch g1 and g4, iPhone and iPad 1, and I have never lost a single thing by syncing any one of those. If you read the manual and check out all the thousands of "How To" articles on the web, and learn how iTunes works, you will be reasonably safe. iTunes can be a PITA at times, but considering how many things it does, and how complex it is, I feel all and all it is a very good program. Lets face it, it's probably a more complex program than iOS is, and we all know how crazy iOS can be. Spend some time, and learn how to use the tools provided, and you will be surprised how smoothly things will work. And don't put to much faith in over the air downloads, it worked fine on my developer iPod, this time. However, MAC OSX Lion's OTA downloads haven't gone so well, any glitch in the download, and off to the Apple store you'll go. And you will have to see a tech specialist, as most store personnel would not be able to help. I found this out while visiting the Apple Store, and see the dozens of people there trying to get the download failures fixed, as you can't just re-download.

Uh, but what about backupo? Don't you have a security copy of your stuff? Because that's one of the main reasons of backin' up for me. I always disliked iTunes but, funnily, it seems to work better on my Vaio than on my old iBook or actual MacBook.

BTW, who said the inmortals live in mortal fear? (evil smilie here)

I think the first sentence above says it all. I have no doubt that it's possible to understand how iTunes works with enough effort. To require such effort for a self-described consumer device that is supposed to simplify purchases and management of content is ridiculous.

The problem is hinted at, I think, in the next sentences. What Apple did was to take a music purchasing application and shoehorn into it a vast scope of additional functionality for which it was never designed. The very name of the application is misleading. The functionality for managing content other than music is faulty, at best. The warning messages bear little or no resemblance to what a user is trying to do. It's a mess.

In short, Apple needs to rebuild their content purchase/content synchronization software from the ground up. An application designed for an iPod to support music purchases, extended to the iPhone, and now extended still again to another very different device is inadequate.

No question that Apple needs to invest some serious attention into their on-line support architecture. The sooner they do this, the happier I will be. Bet I'm not alone, either.
