Unfortunately I don't have any tick boxed under Remote Access! I just get the two categories mentioned above.

Thanks.

Can you post a screenshot of the last screen that you get to.......I use a Mac so I may not be able to replicate where you are in the process.

Thanks

Well, that is strange, this is the screen that you should get (from the manual)......

I had the options shown on my Mac when I set mine up.

Maybe it's worth going through the manual to make sure that you haven't missed some specific setting whilst doing the initial set up. You can find the manual here http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705058.pdf

Thanks Archangel, I had to update my WD firmware and now it seems to be working ok. I knew it would be someone 'simple'!

Just read all posts & now eager to buy the WD live - thanks for all the info Gabs. Just need one piece of advice for my set up...

I have 60gb of music on old PC that takes 10 minutes to boot up! All copied onto IPod. Now only want to use my 16gb iPad & a NAS... I also have an AV receiver with AirPlay... Can I simply store all my music on the NAS & use iTunes via the iPad to control it? Also, if I purchase songs from iTunes via iPad, how do I get them onto my NAS?

Interesting question as I have never bothered to look into this......so you got me interested.....and yes is the answer!

The image above is an extract from the user manual (I posted the link to the entire manual about four posts earlier in this thread). I believe that you can copy your iTunes library straight over from your laptop (but I haven't dug deep into this so far).

If it were me I would consider still keeping a computer as a back up for access (maybe a Mac Mini or similar tucked up under your TV) and always, always, always make sure that you back everything up to an external drive.....imagine if you transfer everything over to a My Book Live and something happened to it......Ext HD's are cheap, go buy a large capacity HD and get into the routine of regular back up's.....this is one of the main reasons that I do not encourage folks to do away with their Mac's/PC's entirely.

Great news... this looks perfect for my needs - music & photos.

Only question left is how can I add more music & photos to the NAS just using iPad? Earlier posts suggest I can't do this with an iPad, which seems annoying.

I'm buying music with iPad & transferring photos to iPad... It's just so much quicker.

You can certainly add photos with just an iPad, I still haven't started using the new WD app so I can't be certain what can be uploaded using that until I do fire it up.

Take a look at this, and make sure everyone that your external device is password protected

Good post, GK

My dad recently bought a new belkin router. When I installed it for him I noticed it has a card slot on the bottom with a paper card installed. That card has the serial number on it and a factory assigned unique password which has been set on the router. The user can change too, but at least it is not the commonly know default password printed in all the manuals and posted all over the Internet.

A friend of mine recently told me of some funny business going on with him Internet at his house. All of a sudden it didn't work anymore. I went over to have a look and found that one of his neighbors had gotten into his wireless router and had made a bunch of changes. The person was trying to get my friend attention by gumming up the works, but didn't lock him out of his router. So I was able to set him up with a proper password so others could not simple taken over his network.

Companies are so afraid of putting users off so they make stuff have no default password because users are too lazy or interested in understanding. It's a hard problem when there is a lot of competition. It's more of a user problem, IMO, because they are the buying public and companies don't want to offer or make it hard for them.

I'm not sure my dad would have been able to deal with the belkin router on his own,

Thanks, i knew that routers and external hard drives that work with wifi (or bluetooth) are vunerable to competent hackers, but what shocked me the most is that wifi built in photo copiers can be hacked into and sensitive info gathered while it is not even suspected as the source of the leak. we have a photo copier at work, a new one and it is connected to the work internet by ethernet cable, and we use it regularly to scan documents into pdf files, or into usb sticks. when we have interviews, we use it to photocopy passports and bank statements, and when i asked around, no one knew that the copier can be hacked into as shown in the video. Granted our IT dept is responsible for the security but what happens when someone just walks to the photo copier and uses the info stored into the copiers memory by transfering to a usb stick? But you are right, many people are too lazy to set up a new password and secure themselves a little more. I know a few people who dont bother to use a pin code on their phones, if the phone gets nicked then the thief has direct access to it  and yes, i hope more people watch the video and realise how vunerable they are
