Today iMore reports that Apple will definitely be releasing a 7-inch iPad in October of this year, for around $200 to $250. iMore’s sources tell them that it will be priced that low because Apple wants to do the same to the tablet market as it did to the MP3 player market back in 2004, when it expanded the iPod line so much until any other competitors were pretty much squeezed out of existence. What is particularly exciting about this story is that iMore says that according to its sources, the new, smaller iPad will have exactly the same specs as the current iPad. That means it will have a 2048x1536 Retina display. For around $200! iMore says it does not have exact details of the size, but it will be around 7 inches. At that size, iMore speculates that the display should have a pixel density of around 326 ppi, which is the same as the iPhone 4S, and higher than the 264 ppi of the new iPad. iMore says that Apple will be able to keep costs down by reducing storage, so you will get around $8GB for your $200.

I can most definitely see this happening, iMore has a great track record with Apple stories.

I wish these rumors would stop. It would be insane for Apple to do this.

Absolutely insane.

They may release a game controller in this form factor, but the market has already slowed dramatically for the small tablets out there now.

This will be an interesting media event in October if this turns out to be true. iPhone 5 and another iPad.

It's time for apple to introduce some NEW product (not upgrades, NEW product) and technology. I feel like they are getting stale.

There is a market in 7 inch, its stupid to assume a market segment does not exist and try to squeeze them to predefined segments. The ipad size is perfect for signing of documents and reading, but there is an explosive segment where the 7 inch will fit for warehouse inventory barcode scanning, restaurant order taking, courier delivery status updates where something that can fit their cargo pants is the way to go.

Exploding? Hardly.

Samsung sold into their distribution of resellers and then sales stalled.

Amazon sold Kindle Fires to existing Kindle Reader owners and sales have stalked.

Apple has no interest in selling 1m tablets a year. Not enough interest unless they can half the price, and that's not possible.

the dont need to half the price, the market is not a retail level market, its more cooperate. What is USD1000 a unit if the crappy data collectors they have now from the like of socket, symbol etc running ancient wince can sell for USD1000-2000 each?
