Sorry, I'm not a knitter. The closest I got to knitting was holding out my hands while my mum wound yarn around them.

Doing the hands-out routine is a Very Important Job but it has to be done with utter concentration so it's no good thinking you could watch the football while you do it. Hands that don't keep up with the correct swinging sideways movement, combined with the subtle flick of the fingers needed, are worse than hopeless. Probably the major cause of family strife, even murder, I reckon.

Nowadays it's a dying art, what with ready-balled yarn as standard in the shops. But those who do the whole yarn-producing job for themselves from scratch (ie, keep the sheep/ goats/ alpacas / camels et al, shear them, dye the wool etc etc) need good hands-out people after the spinning wheel stage. With labour at such a high premium now, it's often a question of picking up a pair of lethal sheep shears & grabbing the nearest person...
(The shears ??... something to indicate the seriousness of the request!)
