Ok, it's my GMT / BST early morning challenge. What is this item? What material is it made from?

This thread is way to quiet. So, I will step things up to a new level by opening up the photo some more.

Here are 2 more written clues.

1. The object is located outside.
2. The object serves the public - so it is in public places for pedestrians.

It looks like a photo of small ceramic floor tiles with grout lines between them.

It's not ceramic, and yes it is used under-foot. Here is wider view, and a differently angled view.

Are they stair treads designed to be non slip?

Yes, Scifan. You've got it right on the nose. :).

The name etc is visible in the top view. These non slip treads are commonly used in footbridges over railway lines.

So, take it away please.

Looks like a key lock power switch. Functions the same way as a regular wall switch except you
need to insert a key in the slot to open and close the circuit.

It just looks like a slot, there's no hole here.
It operates when something moves past it. This one is at my workplace.

Earlier I received a PM from an iPF member who suggested it's a "thumbprint" scanner.

I've seen and used many kinds of print scanners but never one that looks like your image.

It is a fingerprint scanner. It's used to sign in and out at work. The second photo is the scanner on my laptop.
