Live and learn, eh?

I guess the truck engine would have drowned out any sound associated with the lights. Interesting article though. I'll have to listen too, in future.

Well it is the 21st century. Perhaps the aurora is now subject to noise by-laws too. ;)

When I lived in Thunder Bay, on the northwestern rim of the north shore of Lake Superior, I saw the aurora frequently. After blathering on about seeing my first northern lights, a colleague who was from Finland, asked me if I heard them. Which I didn't.

However I have discovered this recent entry at
space.com.

I am rather shocked they haven't figured out how the sound is generated. Because the answer is actually pretty simple. Micro electrostatic discharge between different layers of air. The very fact that they found it happening overhead helps explain that. As the top layer gets a static charge from the aurora borealis the bottom layer, being a different electrical potential, creates a micro lightning bolt to equalize the electrical potential. And those bolts will make a sound. Variance in frequency, decibel level and pitch would all be determined by the air gap being crossed.

productive

Just got into work. taking my iPad into a meeting. It's so much better than lugging my computer around. What app are you using to access files? what do you find to be the most productive?

Here's the first picture.

Great pictures all!

I'd love to see the Aurora Borealis

The road was snowy, but not icy. The biggest delay was cased by an almost two hour wait caused by an unthinking driver who parked his vehicle on the street, despite the no parking signs and being told to move. I'm told he will have to pay about $400.00 to get his vehicle out of the police impound yard.

It's pretty easy on ice, Hayles, cos you can get the back end to slide round the corners. ;)

That's why some of us carry a few chains and ropes.

Of course! You guys must be pretty talented drivers by now. It's not a common thing down ere in Zummerzet. We are slightly warmer than the rest of uk.

Just finished work and enjoyed my drive home seeing all the Christmas lights up and listening to Christmas music on the radio! Did I miss the Thanksgiving holiday? :)

I know, it's crazy how early everyone's starting on Christmas this year. The Hallmark channel is showing Christmas shows, and Target had a Christmas commercial before Halloween!
