What's new

What are you guys doing right NOW??? ;)

The eclipse was quite beautiful really...I guess it may have had something to do with our viewing position looking out over a calm ocean on a clear morning.

But it was the twilight that made it just lovely and the way the sunlight shone on the water. Quite surreal really. :)

So glad you all like it!

Are you uploading the others?

Yes, I will but the other photos are on my iphone and I'm not at home at the moment so won't be on wifi until next week.

Trying to conserve 3G isn't much fun either....went over last month so don't want to go that route again. ;)

Admiring some pics a colleague sent me.
These images of the Aurora Borealis, were taken by him overnight about 45 minutes driving time south of Ottawa.

I am also admiring those amazing pictures, Admiral. The Aurora Borealis is something I would love to see. I'm told that the AB are a noisy phenominum.

Great pictures, Admiral! How often do you see the aurora where you live?

A few times a year, personally, as I have the benefit of being outside at 03:00.

They're appear less intense in the city because of the light pollution.

I asked my astronomer friend on your behalf about frequency, and here's what he said.

"Northern Canada and Norway always get displays and with solar max almost here in 2013 – the odds are getting better to witness and photography Mother Nature’s greatest show. We have had a few good displays in the past couple of months but were clouded out here. All the ducks were lined up on this one and I was happy to capture some images. Keep checking www.spaceweather.com for advance warnings."

"This morning the edge was hanging just a bit north of Ottawa. Auroras are usually best when the sun is on the opposite side of the earth (teardrop effect)."

Thank you for attending today's lecture series. :)

Nope. Totally silent. The best displays I've seen to date were at about 4am in Yellowknife. It seems the colder the better, although I have no idea why.

I was just outside Bonnyville, Alberta one night and the lights covered the whole sky with white light, just leaving a dark circle at the pole.

When I lived in Thunder Bay, on the northwestern rim of the north shore of Lake Superior, I saw the aurora frequently. After blathering on about seeing my first northern lights, a colleague who was from Finland, asked me if I heard them. Which I didn't.

However I have discovered this recent entry at
space.com.

Live and learn, eh?

I guess the truck engine would have drowned out any sound associated with the lights. Interesting article though. I'll have to listen too, in future.
