You can't increase the size of the small realms though, can you?

Yes, you can ... Build -> Castle ... there are 4 levels of size upgrade available.

On the main land, but not on the realm, right?

I missed it too. When you are in the South Realm, use Build\Castle then you can purchase Realm Upgrade levels.
