You can only do that with Emoji, it is a standard international keyboard for all ios5, viewable in all idevice but will not work here if you are using ios5 or higher.

To enable the Emoji keyboard, go to your idevice Settings app, navigate to General > Keyboard > International Keyboards and tap Add New Keyboard… From the list of international keyboard layouts choose Emoji

I use my old ipod when i'm using that.
