Ipad2 cracked screen

I discovered a crack on my ipad2 screen after a business trip two days ago. It had a hard cover and was in a padded computer bag...but still cracked somehow. I attended a genius meeting to be told that it would cost half the original amount to replace (£250). Is there anybody who has an alternative to this or has experienced a similar problem? ....and got it resolved more cost effectively! Thanks.
