As noob, I need to ask, how easy, difficult would it be for Apple to make the mail app capable of uploading files directly from the iPad as attachments?

you can include things like pictures.

as for files, the programs used to open then normaly have a way of sending them via email as an attachment through the mail app.

Adding to what Mikestoolz said.... A cheap way to help that along is to get the .99 Goodreader. You then from within Goodreader can send .doc .pdf and other files as attachments......

It will also open attachments that are sent to you.....
