I am a complete novice to the forum crowd but am getting desperate. I want tp update my ipad2. Ashamed to say I've had it 2 years and it has never been updated. I went to settings/general but do not see "software" update anywhere. I followed web instructions and it should be under "about".

Can anyone help?

Since you have not updated in 2 years, you most likely are running a version on iOS prior to the update being available directly.

You will need to update through iTunes on your computer.

Digging through my memory here, I think you are running something like iOS 4.3. This one did not allow over the air updates, so you need to plug it into iTunes. That should present you with a software update. If you don't get a prompt, find your iPad in iTunes and go to the first page. The option to update should be there.

Usual advice. Do a backup first in case anything goes wrong. And downloading the latest version of iTunes before you start won't hurt.

Hmmmm. Okay I know I will sound like a complete idiot. I swear I'm not but I have no clue how to go about that. I don't think I have an iTunes acct unless it automatically comes with my iPad.

This whole time, I have been updating my apps and never knew I have to update the iPad as well. Duh.

Like I said, I know I sound like an idiot and maybe I am. At least all those pieces of paper on my wall says I have at least half a brain, just obviously not in tech type stuff. :/

So this iTunes thing?

If you update your apps, you have an iTunes account. The same account and password you use to update apps is used on your computer.

If you don't have iTunes installed on your computer, install it. It's free at apple.com

If you do, run the Update and be sure its at the latest version.

Plug your iOS device into your computer and ask iTunes to update it...then just wait.

iTunes is a program that you install on your PC or Mac. It is your interface to your iPad and other iDevices, such as iPhone and iPod touch. You can download it here. Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now

Once you have it, you need to authorize your computer. I'm giving PC instructions here. I don't use a Mac. Press the Alt key on your PC keyboard, and from the menus that become visible, click on Store, then "Authorize this computer". You will be prompted for your AppleID and password. Now press Alt again, and from the View menu, click on Show Sidebar. Now plug your iPad into a USB port on your computer. Give iTunes a few seconds to find your iPad, and then click on the name of your iPad in iTunes. The screen will change to a page of general information about your iPad. From this screen, you can update the OS.

Hi and welcome to the Forum!

Make sure you do a backup of your iPad after connecting it to iTunes. It's also an idea to disable your virus protection/Firewall on your pc for the duration of the update.
This is a big jump across many updates and will take some time which is dependent on what you already have on your iPad. I'll include a video link to guide you....good luck!
