There has been some interest from various people in what I get up to trucking around western Canada, so I thought I'd start this thread to share photographs etc.

I drive off road quite a lot (hence the thread title) so I get to see some pretty interesting stuff.

Feel free to make comments and ask questions, or just take a look.

For starters, here are some photographs I took earlier today in Chetwynd, British Columbia. Every year, the town hosts the World Chainsaw Carving Championship, and these photographs show some of the work.

Hmmm I may stalk...er, subscribe to this thread, looks interesting already. Like the carved bench, but where would I put it? Oh do you take request? I love looking at beautiful trees and forest, I hear that part of the world has lovely woodlands. When I visit family in Northern California I always try to see the sequoias.

I didn't even know Big Rigs had the capabilities to go off road! Sure there is plenty of power but I always thought the weight would just dig itself into the earth and... Well, get stuck? Are those pine trees?

We have a lot of gravel and dirt roads. While my truck is not capable of going across a ploughed field, where it would certainly sink up to it's axles, it spends a lot of time off the blacktop.

And of course, we have the ice roads in the winter. I'll be posting pictures of those here, too.

Thanks. Hoping to have an entertaining winter. And I'll be on the lookout for anything I think will be of interest. I'm heading out west this weekend, so more pictures will follow early next week. There is no phone service where I'm going, so I won't be around all weekend. I'll have to do a posting blitz when I get back to civilization.

Fabulous photos Kevin! Can't believe they can carve like that with a chainsaw...wonders never cease.

    Keep them coming!

I took a lot of photographs on my latest trip. I'll post some of them when I'm back in wifi land, but there's one that I'd like to share right away.

    image-2201011659.jpg

I was heading south on Highway 37, which runs from the border with the Yukon Territory to Kitwanga. There is construction going on, and the road was temporarily closed. The traffic was building behind me and this motorcycle overtook the line of vehicles, and stopped in front of me. The last thing I expected was to see that the license plate was British. I don't get surprised on the road very often, but this guy and his wife made my travels look a bit sick. They are on their way from England (the north by the sounds of their accents) via Europe, Russia, Mongolia, Korea, the USA, Alaska, Canada to South America, Argentina to be precise. Wow. I'm impressed.

Must be one awesome trip for them!! I think you'd probably need a year off to do something like that!

Thanks Maura. This one is from a couple of years ago. It was taken on the ice crossing over the Mackenzie River at Fort Providence in the NorthWest Territories, about 300 km from Yellowknife. At this point the river is about 1.4 km wide. I'm told that the ice is 16 feet thick, and it needs to be. The river is still flowing under the ice, and the trucks I was driving at the time could weigh anything up to 63 tonnes.

Apparently I've been sleepwalking since I missed this thread completely.

This is a great idea. Great pics all.
