Try a reset. It may help. Some apps that are not yet updated for iOS 5 may still have problems, as Maverick seems to have noticed. ;)

Reset: Hold down the power and home buttons until the Apple logo appears. The iPad will reboot. This usually takes a bit longer than a restart.

Pages, numbers, and keynote specifically crash for me. I open them, they have that gray background saying pages, it'll stay like that for 5 seconds, crash, but when I reopen it, it works fine.

I'm getting the same as Sonicrobby. These Apple apps are crashing very frequently. Calendar too. Maybe something to do with iCloud integration?
    It's so bad I'm beginning to think I should've waited for 5.1

I have a lot of apps on my iPad2 (over 200), but I'm not experiencing any sort of escalation in crashes.

I've always thought of iOS4 as the Apple equivalent of Windows 3.1; iOS5 is like Windows 95 - an improvement, but requiring much more processing power and memory. So running iOS5 on an iPad1 is like running running Windows 95 on a 486-50Mhz machine instead of a Pentium - you can do it, but it won't be pleasant.

You're lucky. My iPad 1 has memory crashes frequently since the upgrade, unless the taskbar is kept almost completely empty.

Same problem here, Apple needs to do a better job insuring that new versions of iOS don't break all the apps out there or people are going to stop upgrading.

I've got an iPad 1 but my apps aren't crashing. Have you guys reset your iPads? That's seems to clear anything wrong.

The iPad1 was reset to factory, then upgraded to iOS5. The problem is simple: the iPad2 and later iPhones have more memory than the iPad1 and the new operating system was written to taken advantage of that, as have the app updates. There are some apps that always pushed the limits of the iPad1's RAM and processor on my iPad1, and now those apps are crashing frequently. We can blame my set-up all day long, but both Ipads are running identical set-ups, both are top-of-the-line models (64GB 3G), and the iPad2 runs like a champ while the iPad1 has more crashes than a demolition derby.

The iPad equivalent of "format and reinstall." Go into Settings/general and scroll down to reset.

That would be a restore. It erases everything; apps, data, settings. You end up with an iPad in the same state as when you bought it. Reset is less drastic. It is more than a restart, but nothing is deleted.

It is a bit confusing, since it is found under Settings > General > Reset; however you'll notice the command that does the big erase is not itself called a Reset, and every thing on the page that is called a Reset only affects specific services.
