Writing long documents

What is the best app for writing essays or doing projects on the iPad?

You'll probably find pages is the most suited to your needs due to its functionality and ease of use. If you're thinking of typing up large documents I'd recommend buying a Bluetooth keyboard such as the apple wireless keyboard or even one that sits in a case as the onscreen keyboard can become a bit tiresome if you're typing for long periods of time.

You can download the manual for your iPad here http://support.apple.com/manuals/ and in iBooks search for "iPad user guide for" and you will find free comprehensive manuals for both iOS 4 and 5.
