No, and unless these files exist only on your Ipad, then no to the second query as well. That being said you should still be keeping at least one backup of your files outside of the copies on your actual computer system.

To those who are still checking now: You may want to wait for the next 1 1/2 hours. Apple is known to release iOS updates at 10am PST (or 1pm EST).
I just finished syncing my iPad 2, and I will let you know when I get iOS 5 later. So excited!!!

Would my pictures be safe? Can I sync those with iTunes as well? the reason why I'm asking is I have like hundreds of wallpapers.. but I guess if iOS 5 wouldn't wipe my iPad then I don't have to worry, right? I'll make sure I sync it with iTunes just in case, I suppose.

Sync photos and everything with iTunes first, you won't lose anything

In my opinion if such a statement is made for October 12 availability than the product should be available 12:01am October 12 and the preparation for the release should have started on the 11th. Here is proof that Steve was good at detail.

It's all speculation. Apple has never announced a time but people are guessing 10am Pacific time - mid morning in CA and just after lunch at the data center in NC

FWIW Apple has multiple data centers.
