Correct,Admiral. It's a TA-1/PT sound powered field telephone.

In it's other life it masquerades as the bridge telephone on the Battlestar Galactica. I snuck onto the Bridge last time you were barbqueing and pinched it.

It looks like a metal plate with a hole used to insert a pin of some kind. From all the scratching around the hole,the pin is inserted manually. Is it part of the locking mechanism for a chain link fence gate?

The device consists of two parts. What's inside the hole (it does all the work) and the composite case that contains it.
I know it's early but everyone here has a sharp mind to help them draw the correct conclusion.
