I know what it is, I just can't remember the formal name, it makes holes when you hit it with a hammer

Sorry about the delay,I accidentally fell asleep. Fleur, your guess isn't correct. Stranding,it's not an awl.
One final clue. Small nails go into the slot in the side of the device. The pin is inserted in the end and hit with the hammer.

Is it a nail set punch? I've seen the spring action kind which looks a bit like your device.
If it is, its purpose is varied. Handy for finishing nails in tight spots or on finished or specialty wood like combings, moldings and baseboards.
The nail set drives the nail just below the wood surface. After you fill and paint or varnish over.

Or, I'm totally out to lunch on this. :)

No,it's not a nail set punch. After using my device, you would still have to use the nail set to recess the nail head before finishing.

So then would it be a "nail starter?"

It does more than start the nail,it drives it flush with the surface. Your answer is close enough, however.

Your turn,Admiral.

I wish I could stay up to monitor a challenge. Gotta grab some winks. I'll check in at 03:00 to see the latest mind bender.
The challenge is open to all iPF members.

What is this?

Why was it made?

It looks like a Teacup, made to drink tea out of.

Yes it is, but the reason it was made is deeper than that, so to speak.

A maths clue is (10 - 3) x 11 gives what. Place the answer after 19 for a significant year.

Solve the clues, and you will have answered my second question.
