What's new

What is it?

Here's one that has nothing to do with optics or technology.
What is it and how is it used?

My father was a track and field coach. He tried unsuccessfully to teach me how to compete in the "discus" throw.

An athlete holds the disc with a palm on - fingers
spread grip. To throw he / she swiftly rotates their entire body with disc arm extended. After two or three revolutions, the disc is released. The farthest throw wins.

Your image is of an older style "wood" discus with metal centre balance and edges. Today's
most common discus is made with composite or ABS materials but still finished with a galvanized steel edge.
The premium, highest spin rate discus, has a carbon composite body and alloy rim.

Discus is an ancient sport. The most famous and classical representation, is the 5th century BC Myron statue, Discobolus.

Discus was one of the events of the ancient pentathlon and dates back to at least 700 BC.

Has he managed to teach you how to juggle,Admiral?

He has tried. I've convinced him to be happy that I get great enjoyment from "watching" him perform.
He's quite good and self taught.

The screw in the center allows the center plate to be removed to allow balance and weight adjustment to be carried out. This is a 1kg discus.

I'm certain they've been at the centre of a few UFO hoax photographs.

Going to work in 5 hours. Have enjoyed today's
challenges. Hope others check it out and start to participate.

Good night.

just spotted this thread guys and I'm loving it!

as for that photo Richard, I'm waiting for more to follow, but my input on it would be...... it's a slotted screw in a cup, so that would mean timber that is able to be taken apart......possibly a bookshelf??

under closer scrutiny is it a double flush on a toilet???

I think I'm just clutching straws here lol

I thought you would need another picture. I'm opening out the first picture here. I hope it helps.
