Is it an iron lung? (A negative pressure ventilator). It enabled a person to breathe when normal muscle control was or they had difficulty breathing on their own.

It's use pretty much end in the late 50s - early 60's when it was replaced by the "positive pressure ventilation & intubation."

Hi Scifan, you are right about the angle from which I took the photograph, but it's a different type of aircraft.

It's an interior photo taken on a Lancaster Bomber.
There are at least 2 still flying.One in Britain and one in Canada,with a third example,also in Britain,which will be airworthy shortly.The airworthy lancasters are owned by aviation museums and are flown as part of their programs at various air shows.
Normally flown by a single pilot,this example has been fitted with a second control yoke,branching off the main one.

Spot on, Scifan.

I saw this one in Calgary 2 years ago. It was great to get up close to it.





The British Lancaster, part of the heritage flight with a Spitfire and Hurricane, is an awesome sight in flight. I was once "buzzed" by the heritage flight when parked up in a valley just west of Biggin Hill airport. Unfortunately I didn't have the right camera with me, so no photos - just wonderful memories.
