What's new

What is it?

This item has nothing to do with photography. It is a WWI military optical device. The circled area assists in using the device at night.

Is it a monocular sighting device for the M 16 "Blink" signal lamp, used by the Wehrmacht in the Second World War?

AA

It is a monocular sighting device, but not for the M 16 "Blink" signal lamp,it's about 3 times larger. It was used by the German Army, but not in WWII. In any case,I don't need the exact designation of the monocular. What I need now is the purpose of the circled area in my second picture.
Here's a photo showing the monocular together with one from the M16 "Blink" signal lamp.

Shows the range? By which I mean the distance to what you're looking at?

The circled area is not for showing the range of what is being looked at. It's purpose is to enable the device to be used at night. What is this part called?

Ah, forgot that. Pathetic. I must go and do a crossword to keep the Alzheimer's at bay.

Hint; an accessory shines a light into this area to illuminate something.
A similar device is used in the eyepieces of astronomical telescopes.

Getting too technical for me. We need Sir Patrick Moore, the Sky at Night man who, would certainly know.
