I've been checking out the new video streaming service offered by Redbox and Verizon. They're doing beta testing now and have sent a free code for a one-month streaming trial, with four free DVD rentals at Redbox kiosks. I've been checking out the selection, which doesn't seem to offer any advantage over Netflix or Amazon, so I'm not sure why I'd want to use even the free trial.
In the runup to sending the beta code, Redbox also sent two free codes for DVD rentals at kiosks. I can't remember the last time I used a Redbox kiosk. Standing out in the cold (at least right now) checking out limited movie selection doesn't seem appealing, even for free. I think the only appeal might be holding a DVD by reservation via the Redbox app, for pickup at a kiosk, and then only if it wasn't available streamed, and if I wanted to see that specific movie immediately. Seems like a very narrow appeal to me, since I already have Netflix and Amazon streaming, as well as Netflix via mail. I'll be curious to see what kind of traction Redbox gets with streaming. It seems late to the party, with a small differentiator, but I like to see competition.
