What's new

Welcome to the new iPad Help section!

Stevenflaugher, the thing about the iPad is that the only way to get it up and running is to connect it to a computer with iTunes on it. It syncs and registers you as an iTunes user which gets your iPad up and running. So you do need a computer to get started. But , the friendly folks at the Apple store can connect it to one of their computers and have it up and running there. You just need to register later.

Thank you for your very HELPFUL and valid suggestions and advice. I will do this!

ipad will not replace a computer

But can you help me understand why I need iTunes to have a working iPad?

You want to replace a computer by a iPad, this will not work ... iPad can do many thing like a computer but not replace it and it's not made for that

iPad is more for consult that produce .... of course he have wonderful capacity but yet not the capacity to replace a computer ( i believe Apple will love to propose a tablet can fully replace a computer but this will not arrive with the iPad …..

ONE small example : a colleague want to give you a file in you can’t give him USB dongle and charge it in you’re iPad even you have 3G suppose he as a netbook and no wifi available he can’t even send you by email

example like this i can give you some hundred

The best thing to do is go to a friend or family member and do the initial set up on itunes on their computer ie registration etc. After that you can access itunes direct It is a good idea once a month or earlier to go back and connect again so that the ipad is backed up if that makes sense

I just emailed, from my desktop a 19mb PDF file. When I tried to open the attachment on the iPad it says "to large to open.". Does anyone know if there is a way to open the document?
Thanks
Several third party Apps can do it. Goodreader is I believe the best one and better still they have an ipad version
goodiware.com :: products or search for goodreader in Apps itunes

This is from the itunes store description
Congratulations! You've found the one and only Good Reader app for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad! If you need to read huge PDF, or TXT files, you've come to the right place. Faithful users of GoodReader have reported flawless performance with files over 1 gig in size; but that's only one of the many features that makes GoodReader the best app of its kind.

Ha ha I used special technology to divert the jet to Brisbane so I can pick yours up at the Airport here Sorry about that:D

Na I will wait to order mine in Australia when it is released Hoping I can get it at cost as we sell ipods and are an Apple direct reseller ( ipods at the moment. I also can order a demo via the Apple reseller whom I am associated with ( long story) Problem is I suspect Apple will sell through Apple store and their retail stores only when its released around April 25.

Enjoy your Toy:):):):):):):)
Throw a shrimp on the barbie and have a Fosters on me to celebrate:cool:

I agree, a very needed addition. Now we need some bonafide "official" iPad Help Crew people :)

Count me in to be part of support team.I am already providing support in several areas on the site mainly trouble shooting Macintosh issues etc and ipod/ipad questions. Its my speciality as you know. Can handle limited windows support if its itunes.
Col Apple Support specialist = :D

SO glad to see this thread. Most appreciate the moderator's help the first 20 minutes I had my iPad and, in total desperation, wrote him an email. I erased it before replying, "Thank you."
QUESTION: Also posted in Netflix thread before I saw this thread -- Netflix app never takes me to the sign in screen, and I haven't found a way to get to the sign in screen. I only see the page for people who have forgotten their password, fill it in, go to my email via Safari, open the Netflix reply, click, and get back to Netflix (page to enter a new password). If I stay signed in to Netflix all the time, I can then immediately use their toolbar and get rolling. This is time consuming, and a pain. No reply when I emailed Netflix Support. ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEAS?
I'm loving this iPad.

I regret I am unable to access Netflix from Australia as we need US address and US credit card so I am unable to help. I will forward this to another Moderator

The sign in should be in the upper right corner when you start the app.

Just a simple question from gramma. I use my iPad a lot. Usually I charge it intermittent during day the want to know if it would be okay to charge it all night. Will that hurt the battery. Is it possible yo overcharge it. Say if it is at 70% and I charge it all night. :)

Lithium ion batteries can be charged any time for any duration without after effect or memory effect. Rest assured. I plug anything as soon as I don't use it.
