Happy using my iPad when the screen blanked and displayed a red thermometer saying something like "iPad too hot. Wait for it to cool down before using" raises the question - does this only sense over temperature or is there an app that can use the temperature sensor to tell how hot the day is?

This is the high temperature shutdown notice and only appears when the iPad becomes too hot for safe operation. It doesn't display the actual temperature and can't be used for anything else.
