Problem installing Instapaper into Safari

I downloaded the app; the next step was to install it into Safari. The screen message said to put the iPad2 into portrait orientation. I did just that - and nothing happened. So at this point the app doesn't work - I don't have a "Read Later" marker on the screen.

I checked the developer's support site where he stated that it was "difficult" installing the app into "Mobile Safari" and could not offer any support on the problem. Is he referring to the iPad version of Safari - as opposed to the desktop ? If so, then why is the app marketed to iPad users ?

You'll need to make an Instapaper bookmark[let] in your iPad's Safari bookmarks. Copy all of the blue typing below (including the bold) and then paste all of it into the iPad's Safari URL address field (take out the space in the beginning - h ttp - I had to put that there so it wouldn't make a link in this post):

h ttp://img.labnol.org/b/instapaper.html#javascript:function%20iprl5%28%29{var%20d=document,z=d.createElement%28%27scr%27+%27ipt%27%29,b=d.body,l=d.location;try{if%28!b%29throw%280%29;d.title=%27%28Saving...%29%20%27+d.title;z.setAttribute%28%27src%27,l.protocol+%27//www.instapaper.com/j/uQMxxPQBfUxi?u=%27+encodeURIComponent%28l.href%29+%27&t=%27+%28new%20Date%28%29.getTime%28%29%29%29;b.appendChild%28z%29;}catch%28e%29{alert%28%27Please%20wait%20until%20the%20page%20has%20loaded.%27%29;}}iprl5%28%29;void%280%29

This will take you to a web site that will give you further instructions - essentially, you'll create a bookmark for the web page that opens up with this link, then you'll delete the bold part in your book mark. This will create an active Instapaper link in your Safari.

It sounds a lot more complicated than it is. I have this installed on my Safari and it works great. Good luck.

Mine only has the javascript part, and works fine. I wonder why. The code is a tad different too.

javascript:function%20iprl5()%7Bvar%20d=document,z=d.createElement('scr'+'ipt'),b=d.body,l=d.location;try%7Bif(!b)throw(0);d.title='(Saving...)%20'+d.title;z.setAttribute('src',l.protocol+'//www.instapaper.com/j/SrztHioaPNq1?u='+encodeURIComponent(l.href)+'&t='+(new%20Date().getTime()));b.appendChild(z);%7Dcatch(e)%7Balert('Please%20wait%20until%20the%20page%20has%20loaded.');%7D%7Diprl5();void(0)

I just could not accomplish this on my iPad. When I was in Safari, I could not edit the link to take out the bold language. Maybe I just didn't understand how to do it.

After you paste the link into the link field (in the bookmark), hold your finger on the line until you get a magnifying glass. That should allow you to move along the line (toward the left) until you get to the part you want to delete. Then, you can use the delete key to delete that part all the way to the left.

If that doesn't work, or you can't get it to work for you, try copying and using the one posted by twerppoet. His doesn't need to have anything to delete and it works.

I had put the bold part in so you could go to the link to understand how bookmarklets work (and to get the steps to make a bookmark)...

Hope that helps.
