I'll second Pages. Lots of good ready-made templates as well as blank ones, and documents/creations are accessible on all devices with iCloud. It's also available for download free with the iPad Air (and, I assume, with the Mini Retina?).

Pages is very good, and it will open and edit Word documents as well.
There's also CloudOn (free and paid version) for creating and editing Word documents.
Documents To Go is another app that can create and edit files.

You folks are great - thank you so much! CloudOn requires sign in, but it is free? Thanks.

There's a free app, as well as a paid one.

You can connect your Box, Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive account to it and edit those files. They will be saved to the original account again afterwards.
You have to login to these accounts/grant access to them. I don't know if you have to login to CloudOn (the app) itself, without connected account. I use it for over a year now (tbh, since iOS 7, I prefer Pages), and my app was always connected to cloud storage.

I recommend pages but some people use google docs. Which is free. Free. Lol. But I don't think u can use it offline like pages. Pages saves to PDF as well.
