Hi,

With only PC experience I am struggling to help my wife with her new iPad. She is a technophobe and couldn't cope with the PC so the family advice was to get an iPad as they are much easier.

So far we haven'y found that. We only want e-mail, photos and internet and find that the Apple help is very basic and the book IPad for Senior Dummies isn't much better.

Sample query - opening an e-mail the dustbin icon doesn't appear. Should it? If not how do we delete a message?

This may be the first of many simple questions:)

If it looks like this:

Tap the folder icon, which will show you all mailboxes, including the Trash mailbox of the account:

Hi Grandad - welcome to the forum! :) You might want to provide some more information: 1) iPad model; 2) iOS being used; and 3) ISP supplying your internet connection; the latter will help in setting up your email connection and/or resolving problems.

By 'Apple help', do you mean their website, manual, and/or other sources? If not already done, download the iPad User Guide for iOS 7 (now I'm assuming that your iPad has the most recent iOS which is the iPad's operating system).

NOW, photos can really be tricky on the iPad, especially when using iTunes, so let us know if you have the latter installed on your PC and how you want to use the iDevice for your images? Dave

You can also swipe left on an email in the list to get a Trash (or Archive) and More options. If it says Archive, you can override it with the More, then Move option to move it to the trash folder. Or vice-versa if it says Trash and you would rather it ended up in the Archive folder.

In Johanna's example you are seeing an email account that has been set to archive emails (by default) instead of placing them in trash. The icon she is pointing at is the move icon, used to move an email to another folder. The icon next to it, that looks 'slightly' like a file box is the archive icon.

If you go to Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars and choose your account in the Accounts list, somewhere in those setting you should see and archive option. If you turn this off the box icon will be replaced with the more usual Trash icon, and things will work more like you are used to. You may have to dig into the advanced settings to see the option.

If you have more than one account, the icon will change depending on what email/account you are in at the time.

If you look at my screen shot you will see I have the trashcan instead of the box icon, as this is how I prefer things.

Thanks everyone - great welcome and help.

Its an iPad3 with iOS7, ISP is Virgin.

Lots of my wife's photos on my PC and I print the best ones for her. Next printer will be iPad compatible so she can do it herself. Daughter has set up a some sort of family photo network so she can post hers and see theirs.

I'll put future queries (there will be lots!) in the appropriate forum.
