New ipad

Hi just discovered this forum and amazed at the comments on apple customer satisfaction in the u.s. I had my ipad 2 12 months and 2weeks when it died while on holiday in oz, returned it to the apple store in manchester Trafford centre and was told un repairable and as it was out of warranty could not help me and that I was just unlucky. So I had to buy a new ipad but chose to go to a 3rd party who offered 2year warranty.

I was under the impression that warranties in the UK (and the rest of the EU) were two years. Is this incorrect, or is it a recent change?

I know Apple have recently had a bit of trouble with EU governments for being somewhat less that forthright on the issue.
