Could I transfer files from a USB drive using a USB adapter ?

It's very unlikely. The 30-pin does not supply enough power to do this.

What type of files do you mean? Apple has created the Camera Connection Kit (CCK) that allows you to transfer pictures and videos from a low-powered USB stick (or an SD card) to the iPad. But those are the only files that can be transferred with a stock iPad - and you must use the CCK.
