It doesn't matter if your on the internet or not, in safari or not. I have read about memory low problems causing it. The only thing I had on it were songs, so I did a restore and left them totally off. Still crashes. I made sure nothing was running in the background. Problems started when I upgraded to 5.1.1. So I went to downgrade which apparently you have to jailbreak to do. Redsnow stops during the upload and says transferring control to jailbreak. After about 5 minutes it shuts down restarts and you have your basic ipad that crashes well but other then that does nothing well. Is there not a way to revert back to 5.0.1. I really don't care if it's jail broken or not. You would think iTunes would allow you to pick from a list of compatible Ipsw. Especially since they don't support a device you can still buy new in some stores.

Sorry if you already did, but have you tried a hard reset of your iPad? You need to press and hold the power and home button simultaneously for about 10 seconds, until the screen turns black and the Apple logo appears.
