It's a concrete spill way (or whatever you want to call it). They run across the creek very 30 yards or so for the entire length of the path, 3 and some miles. I have no idea what their original intent was, but they slow what would probably be a fast narrow creek into a broad shallow river.

Not really. It's just a creek that runs through most of the city. If I had to guess I'd say it's mostly about flood, irrigation, and erosion control. Someday when I think about it and have the time I'll see if I can research the creek's history.

Been away a few days to Wrightsville Beach on the Atlantic Ocean near Wilmington, NC - I've started a 'Carolina Coast' thread in the travel section and will be posting more pics there, but just a few from a visit to Airlie Gardens - turtles (yellow belly sliders) & birds (great egrets) in a live oak w/ lots of Spanish moss -

Hi TP - beautiful poem and quite accurate as to the live oaks, marshes, and sense of blending he describes - I don't know much about him but he was born in Macon, GA and likely was quite familiar w/ the Carolina-Georgia coastal area - the Airlie Gardens (not a large place) has a wonderful collection of live oaks w/ some of the MOST Spanish moss that I've seen on these trees - one is known as the Airlie Oak (couple more pics below of that tree which is over 400 years old - was probably a youngster when the 'Lost Colony' was briefly in place on Roanoke Island, coastal NC - mid-1580s). Thanks for the link - Dave
