Bill

Hi Bill - thanks for the comments; I've gone over the history of most of those guitars in his collection w/ my BIL over the years, but can't remember all of the details - BUT, that steel bodied National is from the 1930s, I believe - neat!

My wife, Susan (a member here but not too active) is best on the piano & singing (wonderful combo in the house) - she's kind of ignored that wonderful harp, but the sound is absolutely beautiful - the harp was made by Chris Caswell (his instruments used by many professional Celtic harpists), who died from cancer early this year (obit HERE) - really a sad passing - I exchanged a few emails w/ him concerning harp construction (interested not only as an owner of one of his harps but as an amateur woodworker). She also has a mountain & hammered dulcimer & a bunch of recorders - recently bought her a Chalumeau which is the Baroque precursor of the clarinet - pretty much a recorder w/ a reed - handmade in Europe (and damn hard to play!) - Dave :)

I was walking around Darscho this evening. It was almost dark when I arrived at home again. But I think it was worth the time. These pictures are cropped, not enhanced:

Some time ago, I already used her as avatar. You missed that. :-)
See what you're also missing, while you're in Vienna?

Lots of birds (geese)

I hope you see it: there's something like a rainbow in the clouds. :-)

Yes, i see... But the weekend is near :-)

Another picture I also took yesterday. It shows my village from the other side of the lake. It looks like Apetlon is next to Darscho.

And the last one: evening landscape with moon, the lake reflecting the sky above.

Some more pictures from my walks. Taken with the DSLR and slightly enhanced to look more the way I remember them looking.

I'm currently using these as my Google+ and FaceBook covers, respectively. I like to change them to reflect the season.

So I'm not the only one who thinks the pictures I import to my device look different that what I experienced.

The human eye is much more capable than a camera. It's response to the range of light and color has yet to be beat by consumer electronics, or film, for that matter.

That, and I'm not good enough with my camera to always (or even most of the time) produce the results I see. Which isn't always a bad thing. I've accidentally produced lovely pictures from rather boring subjects. ;)

So, I unashamedly will post process a photo to get whatever look I want. Though I do feel an obligation to mention that I've tweaked things if they look a bit too much better (but still plausibly real) than my photography skills or the subject can account for. :D

Plus at the moment you're looking at something, you're experience is being affected by the mood you're in, what you may be hearing, and other external factors. t think the time, place and people you're with can also affect how you see and remember things.

I took this when it was getting dark, from a tower:

Yes. And, of course, the camera captures everything you point it at. The eye does too, but the mind only notices the details you are paying attention too. A beautiful sunset in memory may only be the clouds and colors. The picture is everything around them, which may or may not look as good.

This is why photography as an art is mostly about eliminating things; focusing on a particular subject or group of subjects. The more distracting elements you can eliminate the more personal and immediate the picture will feel. If you want to take beautiful pictures, constantly, you not only have to learn your camera, you have to learn to look at everything in the frame, and then make sure the parts you want are the parts actually being captured, and in a way that makes them the most important part of the picture.

And lots of other things. Photography is fun.

Saw this in on my walk today.

I'm guessing someone dropped it, then someone else kindly put it up in the tree so the dropper would be more likely to spot it the next time they walked by.

But my preferred story is that the little lost bear climbed the tree so that he could better see the way back home, and of course he froze when I cam walking by; because toys don't want us to know they are really alive. Hopefully Woody and Buzz Lightyear will wander by and help the little guy get home.
