I don't mind either way but for two things...
The devs came on the forum early on and thanked us for not posting the hints on here.
One persons interpretation of a hint can be a dead giveaway. Not necessarily what is wanted and there'd be no way to know how much was given until it's too late.
Personally I've enjoyed the social aspect as much as I have enjoyed the games themselves. I don't think that aspect would have taken place if we could just come along, get the answer and disappear again without even registering.
Ah, i must have missed the devs' post then. Tried looking for it, but couldn't find it,
I mean, if we dont post hints, I really think the thread isn't much more than a glorified email list then. I don't see any need to keep interacting in public on the thread if all I have to do is PM someone and get their hint privately. I'll argue that the public posting of the hints is what got us actually interacting in the first place. Looking back at this thread from post 1, I see a lot more member interaction there. Now, it really is coming down to the case example I posted above. And if we do have interactions, it's all in PMs which is a type of interaction for sure, but not very public and not really welcoming, IMO.
Case in point: if all we do is post "need help with M31", then received a "PM sent" and then we post a "thx!", that's the end of the interaction. Maybe we might post a "whew, hard one, or tough one, or what a great game!" I suppose... Imagine a newbie seeing over andover again JUST a post for help, a post for a PM sent, and a Thx. Feels kind of closed off to me. Doesn't feel very friendly to me. In the PMs sure, it may be friendly, but on the surface, it doesn't seem that way.
I mean, if I know that all you all want to do is PM from here on out, I see no reason for me to visit the thread (forum). I'll just login and send a PM to theolsen or whoever, get the aching and leave. No other interaction. I mean, there's a reason my first post to this forum was "Hey I finished movies!". I wasn't looking for hints, just saying hey, I can help if you need some. If I had seen that it was just a PM thing, I probably wouldn't have posted or joined. At the time, it seemed like a bunch of similarly minded puzzlers hanging out and sharing their experiences.
