I think one of our Aussie friends had another name for the big wheeled bike. I will see if I can find it...it was great!

So where did they come up with that name? Was it the inventor or a penny in the front kinda thing?
I mean the penny's in the back

They were also called high wheelers or high wheels, but I just read that in school...I've never ridden one! ;)

Wikipedia says:
"It comes from the British penny and farthing coins, one much larger than the other, so that the side view resembles a penny leading a farthing."

Origins:
"Frenchman Eugene Meyer is now regarded as the father of the High Bicycle by the International Cycling History Conference in place of James Starley. Meyer patented a wire-spoke tension wheel with individually adjustable spokes in 1869. They were called "spider" wheels in Britain when introduced there. Meyer produced a classic high bicycle design until the 1880s."

And now you know....

Maybe "spider wheels" is what you're thinking of Val?

No, it wasn't spider wheels and I can't find the post. It might have been in a PM. Maybe someone will read this and help out. Seemed like it was a hyphenated word though.

Sigh. Just purchased the 35 gift card mystery package, which tempted me with visions of a tractor, and got yet another bicycle. I remember a time when I was desperate for a bicycle, but those days are over! At least it wasn't a caterpillar or a wedding cake plant.

Chumleyboo, level 70.

I just got my first big wheel bike yesterday for the first time after trying for i dunno how many times, so im happy :D, next are windmill and tractor ;)

Me too. I just got brown sugar. Before that, I got one jar (!!) of raspberry jam. A bit lame in my opinion...and certainly not a tractor!

If you spent 30 gift card for the large package you can get 6 or 7 blackberry jams :D i got them twice, not in a row. :)

That is very interesting, but what is a farthing? Unless that does means he was the father of the bike?

A farthing was a British coin.

So that is bigger than a penny? Thx for the info. BTW I love BBC and BBC America watch all the time, that is when I learned that the South Carolina dance "****" meant something else to the English.
