Not directly from Notes. You would need to copy the text to another app that can both save the file in a compatible format, and then use Open In to copy that file to Epson iPrint from that app.

If you normally have a computer on your wi-fi network that can access the printer and normally leave it on, you can run a utility on the computer that will make your printer work with Note's built in print ability. FingerPrint is the most popular option. It has a free trial version and costs about $10. Printopia is Mac only, but has a few more options, but costs more. AirPrint Activator is free, but is bare bones and takes a bit more care to install.

This solution works with all apps that have built in print (AirPrint) capability.

Some printers are directly compatible with AirPrint on the iPad. Be absolutely certain the printer supports AirPrint before buying. Some printers may require a firmware update to work. These are usually available on the manufacturers site. If you get this kind of printer you can print directly from within apps that support the feature, which is many.

iOS: AirPrint 101

Of course some of us already have printers and do not want to buy a new one. There are several ways to do this.

One is to use a printing app on the iPad.

Most (or all) other print apps can only print pictures and/or files that have been copied to that app via Open In or other method. Print n Share used to be able to print from AirPrint enabled apps if it was loaded the background. It lost this ability with iOS 5. It may still work with iOS 4 if you get it before the app is updated in the App Store. Several printer manufacturers have their own apps for their printers. In general those apps will probably have the best results, quality wise.

The second method is to load a program on the computer that will emulate an AirPrint compatible printer. Your computer must be on and have the printer available to it. The cheapest (free) is Airprint Activator. More features can be had with FingerPrint (mac and windows) and Printopia (mac only).

There is a third way. A few printers (mostly HP's again) can be set up with their own email address. PDF attachments can be sent via this address to be printed. The last review I saw (several months ago) said it could be quite slow (big files not recommended), and sometimes the emails got lost and never printed. The advantage was that you could literally send/print from anywhere you have an internet connection.

There is a new wrinkle for small business owners and those with more than one printer who would like all their printers to work, but don't want to leave a computer on all the time. The Lantronix XPrintServer is a small box that connects to your network and is supposed to detect and make all your wireless printers available to iOS as AirPrint printers. I haven't seen a full review on it yet, so do your research.

Hi very new to the world of iPad,

And I have read most of these threads on printing and including the apps on the IStore and i am left with a question.

My setup for my home office is a HP laser jet 4000 Ethernet printer which has its own ip address connected to a wireless router (printer is a 5yr old commerCial printer)

All the PCs either connect to the network via Ethernet cable or wireless and every device can print to my printer...

How can I print to this printer?

Most of the threads talk about using air print.. Or leaving a pc running to act as a print server... None of these are viable in my opinion as each PC is used at different times and not any one is left on and connected.

Is there an app that will allow me to print to my HP network printer from the IPad via the network ( wifi to the router than copper cable to the printer) I don't want to use print servers etc so I need to be able to print directly to my printer via its IP Address

I hope I have been clear with my setup

Kind regards
Tim

The app for each printer brand in the store don't' need a server, but they are limited in what they can do. For the most part they can only print pictures and documents that you copy to them. There are several, each with it's own feature list. Just search for 'HP Print' in the App Store. If you printer is wireless, it will probably work directly with it.

If you are willing to spend as much as you would for another low end printer, the Lantronix XPrintSerrver mentioned above will make all you printers available to all AirPrint enabled apps on the iPad. While this is more expensive, it also more useful and versatile than app method. The XPrintServer takes the place of the computer you'd have to otherwise leave on.

AirPrint Printers,

Things that emulate AirPrint Printers,

and printing apps, limited to printing what that app can access;

That's all there is.

Thanks twerp poet

Yep have checked the HP apps but not recognize the HP 4000 laser ... It's a 5 or 6 yr old printer, but print quality is far better than the cheep domestic ones given its a commercial brand and I was given it along with a dozen toner cartridges.. Hardly worth buying another one... Was hoping l one of the apps on here would be able to print to older printers on a network (no its not wireless )

I will keep looking

Tim
