WHAT is going on???? That is REALLY REALLY REALLY weird.
I mean, MrLuke, the Panlong is supposed to be made up of Water, Earth, Fire and Air...and, of those, that breeding combo only had Earth in the mix!
Are you, TheDevilsFootprints absolutely certain you didn't just miss the first (12!) hours of the breed time?? I know, I know, it seems very unlikely you could have but I just can't wrap my head around how else it could have happened!
Methinks there are some big glitches in DragonVale right now...but thankfully these are NICE glitches to have, hehe.

Haha, I swear it said 36 hours and that is what I thought. " sweet I got the panlong dragon." once I put the egg in the nursery, I looked at the egg and was like "not a panlong but I will certainly take it."

I have a 48hr breed from blue fire and crystal in the breeding cave right now and i got my 2nd panlong in the EPI right now too i only have like 18hrs to go on that till it goes into my hatchers and hoping my 48hrs is a moon -fingers crossed-

This thread is FULL of lots of successful combinations for all these dragons. It is always a good idea to do a bit of back reading when you first start on the forums so you can see if your questions have been answered recently etc.
However, my signature, at the bottom of all my posts (assuming you can see it), lists all the succesful combos I have used to get my rares/limited editions and tricky dragons.
Just in case you can't see my signature:
MY RARE/LIMITED EDITION/TRICKY DRAGONS (all level 10's unless otherwise stated)
Rainbow = Blazing x Crystal (normal cave) | Sandstorm = Air x Mountain (EBI)
Sun = Bluefire x Crystal & Scorch x Snow & Bluefire x Storm/Storm x Bluefire (both EBI and normal cave) | Moon = Bluefire x Storm (EBI)
Frostfire = Cold x Blazing (EBI) | Panlong = Blazing x Mud (one level 4 Mud - both EBI and normal cave)
Bluefire is Fire x Cold hybrid. (Ice, Snow etc). I made the 'mistake' (before I really knew how the game worked) of buying gems for my first, and only so far only, Bluefire so can't give personal experience there.
ALL of the dragons that need hybrids to breed take a certain amount of luck and patience. Some people get them straight away whilst others (most of us) try many, many, many times. It usually helps to try one combination a fair few times and then swap the order (eg, Blazing x Crystal becomes Crystal x Blazing). Some combos seem to work better for certain people than others and there's a theory that says certain combos work better on certain days/times but none of this is proven.
Keep an eye on the thread and maybe try a successful combo you see someone else mention.

Then replace that with whatever dragon you just bred, and continue to breed until you get another of the opposite dragon. Just keep breeding and switching out until you get your rainbow! Oh my gosh, this game makes me crazy. I don't have a sun, moon or panlong and I'm going a bit crazy watching everyone getting them!Of course I love the fact people are getting them so much cause that means I have to eventually get them too...right?? Congrats to everyone and their success the past day. I'm just jealous!
Awww, I know how you feel, truly I do. I went througha HUGE lull after my first rare (a Sun) and felt I was never going to get another rare again. Thankfully that turned out NOT to be the case

That's SOOO weird...but of course, a pretty fantastic alternative to the Panlong!

Hahaha, I think they only do that to keep track of the dragons while trying for those elusive Rainbows. I am guessing many people rename them something 'nicer' once they have a successful pair?!!
I never did the gene theory as my 'ordinary' Blazing x Crystal worked just fine for me...though who knows what I'll end up doing to get a second
